Does anyone know how the location services in the app works? Trying to determine if it's based on the default app on the phone or if this is a service where they the ping the vehicle and send it to a map provider

Agreed! I’ve only had my R1S for two weeks, and I have gotten lost countless numbers of times. The worst is in NYC. Terrible! I feel like I’m back in the 2010’s, it just keeps being unable to find where I actually am. So annoying. Missing my Tesla GPS.

My understanding is that mapbox provides the maps (fantastic by the way, I was finding abandoned logging roads in the mountains and they were on the map). But there's a traffic provider for routing and I don't know who it is. I am very disappointed in the traffic provider, who routed me to a closed bridge last weekend. Ha ha! 10 minutes faster because there was no traffic on the bridge!

Erik Van Eaton: Here in San Diego it'll show freeways and roads that are slammed during rush hour as fully red on weekends or other times of the day when there's no traffic at all.
It also frequently wants me to take incredibly convoluted routes that make no sense whatsoever (like instead of driving straight under a freeway perpendicularly, it wanted me to get on the on ramp and go north to the next exit (3 miles away!!), go west across the fwy, then get on the on ramp and go south 3 miles back to the street I was on; easily a 10-minute detour.
When I pick my daughter up from school and take her to her practice about 5 miles away, depending on traffic there are about 5 different ways to go. I'm on a tight schedule and the wrong route is easily the difference between being on time or late. On my phone, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze are almost always in agreement in route and ETA but the Rivian map is the lone outlier, with times that don't jive with the other three mapping systems and bad routes.
It's crazy that I have to use my phone and can't rely on my giant map in my R1S to drive anywhere, especially in traffic. You know, when I should definitely NOT be on my phone.

FYI, it doesn't fix routing, but what has been really helpful for me is to pull up something on Google Maps, and then "Share" it using the Rivian app. At least then I know the truck is going to the right location.

My problem in Southern California has been the age of the map data. SoFi Stadium, opened in 2020, doesn't exist at all. Can't navigate to it without substituting The Forum as a destination.

@jose, I dont believe this will be the full blown google maps just yet... for now it'll just be the place search utilizing google. (not the full blown mapping infra/UI)

I dont understand why Car manufactures dont take advantage of existing reliable solutions. Google Maps, Waze, Apple maps. Why recreate the wheel?
